Chinatown Doos: NYC

A few years ago I was convinced that I would be living in New York City by the time I turned 25. With that fateful moment inching closer and closer, I've found that ambition slipping in and out of existence. My frequent trips to the City have, however, shown me that I can build a bit of a nest here, even if I never settle in.

For the past year or so my NY excursions have been stapled by visits to my super-homie Karen's apartment. Karen lives in Chinatown, worked for MTV Chi, and has a bottomless stash of lychee jellies in her fridge, making her technically the most Chinese person I know.

Over the course of time we've developed a ritual of sorts, in which I get dropped off by the Chinatown bus from some random city, drag my luggage up Karen's four flights of stairs, and veg out in front of Planet Earth on mute, with Panda Bear in the speakers and plenty of green in our system. Yes, the NYC experience to the awesomth-degree.

This past trip we decided to venture out a little bit--and by little bit, I mean little bit--and do a Chinatown day-o-fun. This included such fundamental adventures as Asian grocery shopping, wearing Korean face maskual moisturizers, kicking it on Karen's rooftop in the frigid cold, and eating everything in sight.

These be the random pictures from our day-o-fun.

You have no idea how moist our faces were afterward.

These pants are intense.

"You see that building right there? I have no idea what it is."

If you unwrap the foil you'll find stale chocolate inside.

The view from the apartment.

It's very immature of me to laugh at this and then post it on my blog.

If iLL-Literacy was a fastfood restaurant, this is what it would be.

Yum.

Yum!

More rooftop pix because rooftops are soooo cool:

food. Like I said, we completely and utterly gorged ourselves, stuffing our happy little faces with dim sum from the spot with the big RUN DMC-style DIM SUM sign. Then bomb ass fish balls and noodles at Sheng Wang (not related to my friend Sheng Wang). Then, because we wouldn't be complete fatasses if we didn't, we made a combo-dessert out of the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory and the Egg Custard King Cafe (yes, there is an Egg Custard King, and I visit his palace frequently).

And of course, deepfried MSG to top it all off:

Yes. Throughout all the times I've been in NYC, I've partied in Brooklyn, spazzed out to Daft Punk at Coney Island, hung out with Victoria's Secret models in Chelsea, and rocked shows off-Broadway. And yet, my favorite thing to do in the City is chill at Karen's pad. Chinatown doos.

Thank you, come again.
