rotary connection - they call it stormy monday
reminiscing on: norfolk, va
while the organizers at the show at old dominion university drove us around, ruby and i sat in the back seat giggling like school children at the way the pronounce the name of their town.
"so you guys pronounce it norfuck?"
"yeah. norfuck."
"teehee..."
"okay, we're going to take you to eat at dirty dick's. they have good crabs."
"teehee..."

never in my life did i think that the first state that ill-lit would take by storm would be virginia. in april we traveled to virginia tech and the university of virginia just a week after the massacre. more unsure of ourselves than we had been for any other show, we vowed to do the very best performance we could, in hopes to bring some light to the sullen hour. the result was two beautiful, vibrant shows and the opportunity to build with the audience on a wonderfully intimate level.
we spent the past weekend in norfolk and virginia beach--home of the largest naval base in the country, where the resident poet marco mercado got in trouble for spitting an anti-bush poem a couple years back. but that was back when even the dixie chicks got in trouble for that kind of stuff. yup, nowadays the nor-folks are a refreshingly fierce group of people, passionate about themselves and those around them. i was picked up from the airport by a group of alumni, and when i asked why they were still doing the jobs of student organizers, they just shrugged and replied, "we're all a family." i smiled and nodded my head. i knew it was going to be a dope weekend.

so nor-folks have a tradition of apologizing for the weather. the sprinkles and gray clouds made their way over the city, adding to the quaint small-town feel. it was nice though, and small pettinesses like that are easily forgotten when parliament's pumping out the computer speakers and beautiful people are taking you around. plus, there was doumar's, the spot with the first waffle cone ever! history everywhere, people!

BUT ANYWAY. to all the good people who came out to our show, thank you thank you thank you for a gorgeous experience! from arrival to departure you all showed us a great time, you've definitely got that southern hospitality, even those of you who aren't sure whether you're "down souff" or "east coaasttt" (according to california folks, anything east of texas is considered "east coaasttt). we were thrilled to be a part of your world, even for just a couple of nights, and dare i say it, me thinks me left a piece of my heart there. please take good care of it.
harrisonburg, see you next week!

and oh yeah, sorry that my shiny shoes ruined every single picture at the show.

love,
drizz
